Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, often affecting the big toe. It can cause sudden episodes of intense pain, redness, swelling, and warmth in the affected area. Risk factors include certain medications, obesity, previous joint trauma, kidney disease, genetics, and dehydration, all of which can increase uric acid levels or trigger flare-ups. A podiatrist can help by diagnosing the condition, managing pain, reducing inflammation, and providing guidance on lifestyle changes to prevent future attacks. If you experience severe joint pain in your big toe or foot, it is suggested that you are under the care of a podiatrist who can help you to manage this painful condition.

What Is Gout?
Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.
Symptoms
Risk Factors
Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

Hammertoe and claw toe are common toe deformities that can cause discomfort and affect mobility. A hammertoe bends abnormally at the middle toe joint, resembling a hammer. A claw toe bends upward at the joint where the toe meets the foot and downward at the middle and end joints, creating a claw-like shape. Symptoms include toe pain, stiffness, corns, calluses, and difficulty wearing shoes. Claw toes may also cause pain in the ball of the foot. These conditions can worsen over time, if not treated. Prevention includes wearing shoes with a wide toe box, avoiding high heels, and doing regular toe stretches. Treatment ranges from padding, orthotics, and splints to targeted exercises or, in severe cases, surgery to correct the deformity. If you notice persistent toe pain or changes in toe shape, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with a podiatrist. Early intervention can relieve symptoms, slow progression, and help avoid more invasive procedures later on.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.
Symptoms
Causes
Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible
Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur
Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe
Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe
Treatment
Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it
Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used
Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

Sever’s disease is common of cause of heel pain in growing children and adolescents, as the result of inflammation of the growth plate in the heel bone. It typically occurs during growth spurts when the heel bone grows faster than surrounding muscles and tendons. Risk factors include high-impact activities like running and jumping, tight calf muscles, and wearing unsupportive footwear. Beyond heel pain, symptoms include swelling, limping, or discomfort during physical activity. A podiatrist can diagnose the condition, recommend stretching exercises, and suggest activity modifications, supportive footwear, or orthotics to relieve pressure. If your active child experiences persistent heel pain, it is suggested that you schedule a visit with a podiatrist who can accurately diagnose and treat the condition.

Sever’s Disease
Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.
Symptoms
Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Hammertoe is a deformity where one or more toes bend abnormally at the middle joint, often causing pain and difficulty walking. Flexible hammertoes may respond to noninvasive treatments, but rigid cases often require surgical correction. Common procedures include tenotomy, which involves cutting a tight tendon, tendon lengthening to reduce tension and allow better toe movement, and tendon transfer, which repositions tendons to restore balance and alignment. These techniques are designed to relieve discomfort, correct hammertoe deformity, and improve function. A podiatrist can determine the severity of your condition and recommend the most suitable option. If you struggle with persistent toe pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist to explore customized surgical and nonsurgical solutions for long-term relief.
